Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) has long realized the importance of real-time drilling data. The company utilizes the technology to monitor rig site operations. An in-house real-time surveillance-monitoring centre, called the Smart Drilling Optimization Monitoring Centre (Smart DOMC), was established in 2010 within the company’s headquarters. The centre’s real-time environment was fully managed by a single service-company: data aggregated on the rig site was kept in the service company’s server, in the service company’s proprietary format, and only accessible to the drilling engineering team via the service company’s web-based application. This approach forced PETRONAS to be wholly reliant on the service-company’s own technical application and service, with no ownership or control of (the company’s) real-time data architectures, and only nominal visibility of dataflow and management. In line with the company’s Integrated Operations (IO) initiative and driven by the company’s increasing amount of operations, the availability of a standardized independent real-time data management infrastructure became a critical component in order to facilitate seamless flow of real-time technical data transparently throughout the organization, particularly within the Smart DOMC and the operation team’s disbursed workplaces. Thus, in 2014, the Real Time Well Solution was implemented. The new solution is an enterprise real-time data management solution with web-based delivery, which leverages the Wellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language (WITSML) as the standard format for the exchange of data. It is a secure infrastructure wholly resident within PETRONAS IT environment, which consists of clustered database servers with load balancing and failover backup servers ensuring high-availability, and capable of facilitating the flow of real-time drilling data from multiple rig sites, for the company’s domestic and international operations. It offers advanced customizable web-based features for domain experts to view real-time drilling data, through the standard web-browser and mobile devices. This paper will describe PETRONAS Real Time Well Solution and the three main challenges faced in implementing the new solution. Four case histories detailing the utilization of the WITSML infrastructure during critical well construction operations will also be reviewed. With the new System, PETRONAS is able to implement industry-accepted and non-proprietary standard in accessing real-time information, take immediate ownership and better control of data aggregated on rig sites, and integrate real-time information with existing corporate third-party applications.
Proposal PCSB's Drilling Technology Mastery program was initiated in August 2002.Conceptually, it was designed as a total competency development model forPCSB's Drilling Engineering Department. The Program is built around a modulardelivery format, and takes Engineers from a Foundation Level Certification, through an Advanced Certification, and finally Expert Level. The programcombines core technical skills development, along with soft skills development. The result of this program delivers certified resources, delivering technicalanalysis and results in a more accurate and time-efficient manner. This allowsfor a greater confidence to PCSB in managing drilling risks, thus helping tomanage the improvement overall safety of a project and also contributes tosubstantial reduction of overall project cost. This paper takes as its example, the Foundation Level Certification process, and illustrates the roadmap that a Drilling Engineer follows in terms of astructured modular training program, supplemented with mentoring sessions and, finally challenged by the sitting of a certification. The certification hasbeen jointly developed by PCSB and Landmark, and allows PCSB's DrillingEngineers to be ranked against standard benchmarks which have been based upon acompetency set required for the successful completion of PCSB's standardoperational process. While the objective of the program has been to acceleratethe engineers' development process, the Certification process ensures ameasurable and guaranteed capability from a Drilling Engineer on successfulcompletion of this program. The program is complemented with an online skill matrix database; whichallows management access a dashboard of their current resource pool, to allowmore objective evaluation candidates for particular assignments. It also allowsboth managers and the resource pool a real time competency and tracking toolfor developing career development plans. This program is greatly supported by the implementation of an IntegratedWell Planning Workflow. This defines the process of completing DrillingEngineering analyses from the planning stage to daily surveillanceroutines. Introduction "We are short on resources." The phrase has become a cliché everywhere, especially in the Oil & Gas Drilling Industry. What are we doing about it?How are we going to sustain the global operations with the reduction in theresources numbers? The issue is even made critical with the demanding drillingoperations. Complex wells need to be drilled safely and economically. Question:How are we going to achieve the objective of drilling economically complexwells with the limited amount of resources, while at the same time ensuring theHealth, Safety and Environment (HSE) requirements are met? Answers:We need to get the younger resources up to speed. We need to be able to plan the well faster. We need to be able to make quick and precise decision during the wellsurveillance. We need to be able to analyze wells using the lessons learnt. And at the same time, HSE requirements shall be the key to all of theabove. Technology Mastery does not perform magic to achieve the above butmerely recognizing the issues and assist in the process of achieving theobjective of drilling. Technology Mastery is one of the three components ofBusiness Integration Implementation Program (BIIP); the second componentis the Integrated Well Planning (IWP) Workflow and the third componentis the Data Management.
