This paper will examine the literature review on children in urban space of Kuala Lumpur. Challenges in addressing urban issues vary according to the local context. Urban public spaces in a city did not aim to prioritize children, and it stops them from having independent mobility and freedom to play and socialize. The study will provide a comprehensive review of child-friendly urban spaces intervention focusing on high-rise living in Kuala Lumpur by synthesizing challenges, benefits and recommendations of possible interventions for child-friendly urban spaces. Kuala Lumpur has envisioning in becoming World Class City by the year 2020. Essential elements of form and function of the urban environment are streets. Streets showcase the community and connect people. It's one of the most comfortable social environment that provides aesthetical and interaction pleasure for everyone. Classified as main shopping streets in the local Kuala Lumpur urban design guidelines, Jalan Masjid India (JMI) has its uniqueness of shopping experience and social interaction. This conceptual paper will study the physical and cultural characteristics of the street that will generate the street character by mapping its original characters. The findings will focus on strengthening the methodology applied to promote improvements in evaluating it as a great public space. Results will also contribute to understanding the overall site context, the street connectivity, and urban dynamics. This paper is part of a larger study that addresses on transforming the sociability of public space. IntroductionThe evolution of urban public space had multiple functions, themes, and meanings, which have been repeated through history and are still relevant today. The aim of this study is to provide evidence of physical character and patterns of use of the street that shapes the public space quality. The study will synthesize the overall site context, the street connectivity, and urban dynamics changing the use of public space. The findings will focus on strengthening the methodology applied to promote improvements in evaluating the street as a great public space. This paper is organized into five sections. The subsequent section contains the literature review of the study. The third section provides the methodology, followed by the study area, results and discussion section. The final section offers the conclusion and implications of the results.

Streets are essential elements of the form and function of the urban environment. A growing body of research has pointed out that the more human activities in the street, the more interesting the city will be. Streets showcase the community and connect people. They are the most comfortable social environments that provide aesthetical and interactional pleasure for everyone. This paper presents the outcomes of a study which measured street liveliness based on the attributes and behaviours of the pedestrians. The aim of this study was to examine how people experience the liveliness at various times for various activities on the street. To achieve this, the study applied a case study method by looking at one of the streets that showed a diversity of activities with a unique shopping experience and liveliness in Kuala Lumpur called Jalan Masjid India. The method involved two types of data collection techniques, which were site observations, and pedestrian counts. Results which consisted of behavioural mapping and activity analysis revealed that Jalan Masjid India has its own merits in terms of street liveliness, function, and urban activities.

Abstract. Public space takes many spatial forms, including parks, the streets, sidewalks and footpaths that connect an edge of a space between buildings or roadsides, hence are important spaces in an urban setting. In a city context, the public space frames the city image. Kuala Lumpur's public spaces are typically made up of shopping streets. It allows an ambivalent space that encourages more activities and interactions through the continuity of the street. For that reason, street that brings out life and movement in an urban space is an ideal type of street. In maintaining public spaces and reinventing it, placemaking is a quest for engagement tool to help strengthening legal frameworks in order to protect the public space which is seen viable at a city level. This paper therefore, explores the potentials of public spaces and its management. It applies the case study method by means of investigating two areas in the city encompassing similar characteristics. Generally, the research is designed to test the theoretical framework in managing the public space and its key dimensions in shaping the quality of public space. The researcher then synthesizes the broad range of development of placemaking and the changing uses of public space. The findings will advance further understanding of a suitable application thus intensify the legal framework that shapes the quality of space and its management.
