AbstractPurpose -The primary purpose of this paper is to test and augment the original technology acceptance model (TAM) with three external variables: computer attitude, computer self-efficacy and personality to study the use of the internet of the business executives not addressed previously. Design/methodology/approach -The study is based upon survey approach to collect the primary data from 105 business executives selected randomly. The study tests and augments the proposed model by using structural equation modeling techniques and explained 42 percent of the variance as shared by the three variables. The final model has shown the influence of computer attitude and self-efficacy on the TAM component. Finally, perceived usefulness (PU) directly affects the executives' use of the internet. Findings -The results show that computer attitude has a significant effect on perceived ease of use (PEOU). Whereas, computer self-efficacy has significant but negative effect on PU and has a positive and significant effect on PEOU.Research limitations/implications -The study has its own limitations and suggests that with the inclusion of some more variables R 2 could be enhanced and would be further improved by controlling the response biasness due to the self-reported items. The study also lacks direction in assessing the problems faced by the executives at the inter-organizational level. Practical implications -The study has practical significance as at the inter-organizational level these external variables are under the direct control of the top management and by capitalizing on them through structured training program improved self-efficacy and by adding variety to the task of executives, the management could further expedite the use of the internet. Originality/value -This preliminary work adds value to the existing knowledge and supports the previous work that PU belief segments have relationship to predict the behavior intentions to use the technology. The study concludes that business executives consider ease of use as a fundamental belief that helps them to achieve the usefulness component of the technology.
Abstract. The trends in transportation have been changing and will continue to change over the years. Urban dwellers in developing countries require and demand for mobility and accessibility at the same growth rate of these urban areas. Often, this demand is accommodated by the increased number of private vehicles. Development of a country is closely linked with the transportation system facilities thus will have a positive impact on the economic growth and social fabric of a country. The traffic issues are always associated with private vehicles especially in any developing cities such as the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. A practical, efficient and effective transport system includes traffic management, public transport, road network and infrastructure. However, sadly, at present, the traffic problems in Malaysia are resulted from ineffective public transport system which is not methodically integrated from one place to another, therefore, forcing the people to use private vehicles for daily exercise. An integrated and comprehensive approach is required as it enhances the regulatory framework, planning structure and level of services delivered. For that reason, this paper reviews the magnitude of urban public transportation institutional framework in order to improve the people's mobility, also to respond to the major problem of urban public transportation in the major city of Malaysia. This study therefore applies a case study design and relies very much on qualitative data encompassing policies and guidelines. The findings were drawn from an early investigation of the Malaysian institutional public transport framework through literature review which looks closely into the management structure, as well as the implementation of public transportation system and its enforcement.
This study has a special interest in urban public transportation institutional framework in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The notions for the topic were developed from issues regarding institutional framework in delivering urban public transportation. Although the current urban public transport in Klang Valley has improved, there are still issues concerning the institutional framework. To date, there is no single regulator or agency with the express and overriding responsibilities for strategic management of the public transport system in KlangValley. The purpose of this study is therefore to assess the current urban public transportation institutional and governance framework especially towards urban mobility. To achieve this, the study employs the content analysis and case study method, using the purposive sampling approach for expert interviews in gaining the data from participants of related agencies. It examines the importance of public transportation frameworks and present status of current transport development, as well as the roles of urban transportation agencies involved in delivering urban public transport. Results demonstrated that urban public transportation is delivered through multiple agencies with separate roles, not counting the inconsistency of various policies. Hence, the expectation of this study is to suggest practical approaches to improve the current institutional framework of urban public transportation.
Rivers were places where civilizations arose and aided the foundations of their economic fortunes. However, most urban rivers have today been abused and undervalued, and thus little conserved or re-opened up to celebrate these waterways. Malaysia is one of a number of countries whom have witnessed the former. In 2011, the River of Life (RoL) Entry Points Projects (EPP) was introduced to address this issue aimed towards revitalizing the Klang River into a heritage riverscape and a reinvigorated linear commercial centre for Greater Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley (GKL/KV). This paper discusses the heritage fabric at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers in portraying and narrating the importance of these rivers to the cultural identity of this precinct. Recognising these qualities will result in highlighting the cultural heritage values that need to be considered in recognizing this riverscape as a National Heritage asset. This paper also explored the historical and potential elements of the urban river in Malaysia through the mix method approach (Convergent Parallel). Research data was obtained from Malaysian authorities, using a top-down approach, through interview and visitor participant questionnaires to obtain convergence and divergence perceptions and patterns between these two sources of data. Data obtained sought to elucidate the cultural identity of this urban riverscape and its fabric from the perspective of both official participants perceived responsibilities and the interpretation of the riverscape from local respondent perspectives. The results of data from both participant types is crucial in offering new viewpoints towards a new to better adapt the government’s visions and visitor expectation about the future of this riverscape. This information could better enhance the tourism aspects of this area that has been highlighted as ‘National Key Economic Area (NKEA) 06: Tourism’, and to foster the integration of cultural heritage in an urban setting.
