The article by Darevskii in [1] is devoted to the urgent problem of determining earth pressure on flexible retaining walls "with conslderation of deformations and displacements of the walls." This problem, as'noted in the edltorts foreword, "continues to remain the subject of sharp debate." One cannot but agree with V. ~. Darevskli~s main message that "it is necessary to find a sufficiently universal engineering approach for solving various problems of calculating retaining walls which would be more rigorous than the existing semlemplrlcal methods, but would relate no worse than they do to reality for a broader range of problems, would have a clear physical basis (in semlempirlcal methods the physical sense is often not traced in an explicit form), and would permit developlng a convenient algorithm for a computer."
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
