Symbolic wisdoms; distinguished but communicative wisdoms in the form of imagery (designs or symbols) by which a country, tribe, or ethnic group use to convey its rich culture and philosophies, have since been used in many mediums to communicate to people. Among the Ghanaians, the most popular symbolic wisdom "Gye Nyame" which translates as "except God", symbolizing God's supremacy and omnipotent is not only conveyed in textile design and architectural buildings but also in traditional Ghanaian furniture items. Among the Chinese, Dragon (Lóng), which symbolizes imperial power and authority, protection, good luck, male vigor, and fertility, is the most popular Chinese distinguished symbolic wisdom not only conveyed in textile design and architectural buildings but also in the traditional furniture items they use. There are more symbolic wisdoms used by the two countries in their Traditional furniture industry. They are to serve as a vessel for expression, posing a question or suggesting a possible answer. It is, however, a worry that though most Ghanaians and Chinese users of Traditional Furniture items with wisdoms conveyed in them know and can mention some associated with them respectively, they do not know the meaning or message the symbolic wisdoms carry. Given this, the study primarily aimed at researching the various symbolic wisdoms conveyed in the traditional Ghanaian and Chinese furniture items, to educate users to have indepth knowledge and understanding of their preferred symbols when conveyed in furniture items. The survey research design using the qualitative approach was adopted. The convenience and purposive sampling techniques were considered to select a sample size of 25 respondents each from the two countries for the study (50 respondents). A significant percentage; 55% and 43% users respectively of Traditional Ghanaian and Chinese furniture items with symbolic wisdoms conveyed in them do not know the meaning or message the symbolic wisdoms carry. The study is expected to help educate the users to get in-depth knowledge and understanding of the message the symbols carry rather than just picking and using crafty symbolic wisdom(s). Both Ghanaian and Chinese users are encouraged to find out the meaning and the message a preferred symbolic wisdom carries before it is used. Again, further studies need to be done on the influence symbolic wisdom(s) has/have on users, and how it/they corelates with their behaviour. Furthermore, studies on other peculiar symbolic wisdom conveyed in furniture items found in temples, churches, mosques, etc. needs to be researched.
Traditional Ghanaian furniture designs are known as an exhibition of the splendor and elegance of decorative objects or decorative ornaments that carry profound philosophical and sacred meanings. The features found in Ghana’s traditional Ghanaian design can be considered as objects for international players, with their own identity and not found elsewhere. This paper therefore seeks to identify and illuminate some of these Akan cultural objects in Ghana by referring to the Ashanti region. This paper also shows with examples how these design elements can be developed and maintained by integrating them into modern furniture and interior designs or as a straightforward or adaptive design.
Conservation of wood and restoration of artifacts against wood destroying organisms has been the greatest priority of any woodworker so far as a man greatly relies on wood products to satisfy almost every need. Since the creation of the universe, wood-destroying organisms have been with us, and have over the years caused great catastrophes that bring bad memories to several people, notable is the dunes of Holland and Columbus. Many research papers have been written by scholars across the globe concerning this topic under discussion. Those materials either talk about insects that cause damage, or the processes of conserving and restoring wood and wood products. In bridging this gap, the study aims at educating people on how to control wood and wood products from getting entirely damaged by insects. In achieving this, the study sought to outline some common but dangerous wood-destroying insects, appropriate preservation materials, and the processes to adopt in controlling the damage. In this regard, the study adopted Content Analysis in the investigation, analyses, and composition of the concept. The study divulged that insect like termites, beetles, ants, bees, etc. as well as fungi and bacteria cause destruction or damage to wood and wood products. Preservation materials like lindane, pentachlorophenol, alkaline chloride, sodium chloride, fluorosilicates, boric acid, potassium dichromate, sodium dichromate, tars, kerosene, Bassa, DDT, etc. were also revealed to be effective and reliable in conserving and restoring wood and wood products by the study. These preservation materials can be applied on wood and wood products by either; fine and coarse spraying, brushing, smoking, soaking or dipping, impregnation, injection, infusion, and so on. If the right preservative is selected and the right application method is employed, treatment will last to achieve the prevention of insects and restoring the damaged wood or wood product into a desirable form. The study is expected to serve as reference material in helping the general public, particularly woodworkers and users of wood items to know how to control certain insects attack using the appropriate, effective and reliable preservation material (s) by employing the right preservation process. As instructive research, the authors recommend extensive further studies be done by singling out each preservation material against the methods of preservation to help craftsmen and product users to know which preservation material is appropriate, its advantages and disadvantages for a particular work while employing the right method.
Traditional Ghanaian seats have existed for centuries. As of now, there is no complete research material detailing its history, nature, types, functions, appropriate materials for production, and the symbolic designs conveyed in the craft making it incomplete to tell the rich culture of Ghana. The paper aims at providing a more detailed overview of the craft to serve as complete and reliable reference material to learners. This qualitative study employed the narrative research design. The study was conducted at Ahwiaa and Bomani Tyehimba traditional wood carving communities in the Ashanti and Eastern regions of Ghana respectively. Two historians; one each, and ten traditional stool carvers; five each from the visited carving communities were purposively selected and interviewed. The craft was initiated by the Ashantis and traveled to other regions. The craft has a flat rectangular base, a center section, and a crescent-shaped top. The center section contains distinctive motifs and symbolic meanings that are the source of the numerous stools' names. Some symbolic wisdom conveyed in the craft includes; Gye Nyame, Bi nka bi, Akofena, Sankofa, etc. Ahemmaa dwa, Mmarima dwa, Mmaa dwa, Osram dwa, Kotoko dwa, Esono dwa, etc. are some common types of the craft. It functions as practical items in every home, as a connection to rites of passage, as religious artifacts, and as a political allegory. Wood like Osese (Funtumia sp.), Nyame dua (Alstonia gongensis), Cedrela (Cedrela odorata), Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni), teak (Tectona grandis), etc. are used for the production. The study will add up to the Ghanaian citizens, foreigners, and researchers’ knowledge to know much about the craft and the cultural heritage of the country.
