In this paper a new approach for design jlow management is presented. We describe how the inputlouput relations between tools can be defined in a j%nwnap. For this, several concepts are introduced, such as defiing activities for tools, run-time activity identification, hierarchical jlow graphs, modijkation versus extension, and the possibility to have loops in the j?owmap. We also address tool scheduling and the integration of design Jow management in the architecture of afiarne-bared &sign system.
In this paper we visually explore the data structure of two different visual platforms: the database behind the social environment of a social networking site, and the intricate infrastructure of a research institute for preservation of deposited datasets. We argue that visual analytics of metadata of collections can be used in multiple ways: for the backend users, to inform the archive about structure and growth of its collection; to foster collection strategies; and to check metadata consistency, for the end-users, to give an overview to the collections, and thus to generate more awareness of the collection and its metadata, to give the enduser extra information to contextualize the entirety of the archive. We conclude with a discussion on how text based search combined with different type of visually enhanced browsing improves data access, navigation, and reuse in these two radically different contexts.
This paper aims to elicit a discussion of the existence of a paradigm shift in official statistics through the emergence of new (unstructured) data sources and methods that may not adhere to established and existing statistical practices and quality frameworks. The paper discusses strengths and weaknesses of several data sources. Furthermore, it discusses methodological, technical and cultural barriers in dealing with new data and methods in data science; cultural as in the culture that reigns in an area of expertise or approach. The paper concludes with suggestions of updating the existing quality frameworks. We take the position that there is no paradigm shift but that the existing production processes should be adjusted and that existing quality frameworks should be updated in order for official statistics to benefit from the fusion of data, knowledge and skills among survey methodologists and data scientists.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
