The use of the term Rohingya is controversial. Whereas a group of Muslims in Rakhine State uses this term to name their ethnic group, neither the Myanmar government nor the majority of the population accept the Rohingya as an ethnic group, preferring to call this group of Muslims in Rakhine State "Bengali". This chapter does not aim to advance any position in the discussion on naming. It uses the term Rohingya because it is commonly used and well-known.
