Retained intraocular lead foreign bodies are well tolerated by the canine eye. Three cases (four eyes) of intraocular lead shot are the subject of this report.
A 21‐month old Pekingese was referred with two tissue masses on the left eye, involving the cornea and the bulbar conjunctiva. The clinical diagnosis was papilloma. The surgical removal was conducted as though the masses were a source of additional infection. Light microscopy confirmed the diagnosis and ultrastructural examination revealed the presence of virus particles compatible with the Papillomavirus group. The relationship of these virus particles to the more familiar oral and cutaneous papillomas is discussed with respect to clinical management of these tumours.
