The results of 12 months' study of the growth dynamics of living populations of Chione stutchburyi in their natural environment tend to suggest that macrorings form annually during winter and that micro-bands are not necessarily all daily phenomena. It is concluded that more research is needed on the growth dynamics of this species before micro-band counts can be reliably used to establish absolute seasonal dates for archaeological sites.
