An effort to combine the best lubricant characteristics of the esters, the silicones, and the fluorinated hydrocarbons into a single molecular species resulted in the synthesis of a class of compounds known as carbonfunctional organosilicon fluoroesters. The purified products possess good viscosity-temperature characteristics over wide temperature ranges, low pour points, and good lubricity at moderate and extreme pressures. Oxidation and corrosion stability has been demonstrated at 350' F. and the resistance to coke formation at 590" F. would seem to indicate oxidation stability at temperatures in excess of 350" F. Thus, the experimental results confirmed the basic assumption motivating this research.YNTHETIC lubricants bear a relationship to mineral oils steels to ordinary steel. T h e synthetic oil, like an alloy steel, is required to give superior performance under operating conditions far beyond the capacity of the more common product. I t is not unusual then that the synthetic products command a premium price.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
