Both humans and machines are now capable of producing data at a scale that overwhelms our ability to consume it, analyse it, and draw meaningful conclusions from it. Artificial intelligence, the cornerstone of all machine learning, will become the basis of all future complex decision-making. Healthcare, transportation, robotics, research, education, military, surveillance, finance (regulatory and supervisory), agriculture, the entertainment industry, retail, and customer service are just some of the industries now making use of AI and ML-enabled technology. Artificial intelligence can help out when there is too much data, too many moving parts, or too many unknowns for people to handle on their own. When operating within their limitations, artificial intelligence systems often make prudent decisions. This chapter goes further into why AI is so crucial to the decision-making process.
