The development of the oocytes of Nereis (Hediste) diversicolor and Nereis (Nereis) pelagica takes up to 18 months from their first appearance in the coelom to maturity, and in the natural conditions experienced by the population studied in north-east England the females are in their second year before the oocytes begin to appear. The duration of spermatogenesis is less than that of oogenesis, taking up to 6 months for completion. This information permits a more rigorous interpretation of the size frequency data which have been obtained from a biometrical study of the jaws. In the populations of both species the majority of individuals seem to reach maturity when 3 years old.
SynopsisThe occurrence of a population of the spionid polychaete Marenzelleria viridis (Verrill 1873) in the middle reaches of the Tay Estuary is reported. This is a new British and European record of a North American species, and its principal characteristics are described and compared with earlier accounts. Size frequency analysis of the population showed it to be dominated by large animals from July 1984 to May 1986. The population matured coelomic gametes during winter 1985–86 and spawned in March 1986 to produce a heavy settlement in May, which subsequently grew rapidly. The distribution of M. viridis in relation to other species, sediment and other ecological parameters is described from a single survey of the Invergowrie Bay mudflats. Marenzelleria population densities of up to 1500 m 2 were negatively correlated with all other species of a low diversity macrofaunal community dominated by predatory polychaetes and filter feeding bivalves. Marenzelleria was abundant down to sediment depths of 20–30 cm. The significance and origin of this population is discussed.
At Aberaeron, Dyfed, mid-Wales, the two trochid species, Monodonta lineata and Gibbula umbilicalis breed during the summer months. M. lineata showed a discrete spawning period in late July in both 1980 and 1983, whilst G. umbilicalis spawned in August in both years, though with gamete release prolonged into September in 1980. In both species gonad development begins in April/May, and by June the characteristic bimodal oocyte diameter distribution of mature females has been established. Vitellogenesis and the development of a jelly coat around the oocyte begin when the oocytes have a diameter of 70–80 μm, with mature oocytes reaching 140–180 μm in diameter, excluding the jelly coat.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
