The data from this study suggest that more patients develop skin malignancies than previously reported from Europe. It is important to advise patients before transplantation in regard to skin complications, provide regular dermatological follow-up, and tailor immunosuppressive regimen to minimum doses to be compatible with good graft function.
In the period 1968-76, necropsies were carried out on 30 patients who had been treated by long-term intermittent maintenance haemodialysis. Fourteen of these patients developed bilateral cystic disease of the kidney. Clinical, pathological, and radiological investigation of these patients when they first presented did not reveal any evidence of renal cystic change. The main complications of this condition are haemorrhage and tumour formation. Six patients developed renal tumours, and in five cases these were multiple. The histological appearance of these neoplasms gave no indication as to whether they would behave in an aggressive manner. One patient died of metastatic carcinomatosis from a renal primary. The condition of acquired cystic disease of the kidney should be suspected if patients on maintenance haemodialysis suffer from recurrent haematuria or are found to have enlarging kidneys.
Our preliminary experience with orthotopic liver transplantation in the pig has been reported (Calne et al., 1967). Out of 19 animals operated on 13 survived the procedure and six lived for a week or more. Focal necrosis of liver cells and round-cell infiltration in the portal triads of these six transplants was thought to represent evidence of a weak rejection process. One pig died after seven months from intestinal obstruction with minimal evidence of liver damage. Three pigs developed severe gastrointestinal haemorrhage due to mucosa erosions of the stomach and duodenum. We were impressed with the relatively mild rejection occurring in liver transplants in the pig, and it is the purpose of this paper to present our further experience in this field. We have added vagotomy and gastroenterostomy in an attempt to prevent the gastrointestinal haemorrhage and have related the rejection of liver transplants in the pig to transplants of kidneys and skin in this animal.
Materials and MethodsOrthotopic Liver Transplantation, Vagotomy, and Gastroduodenostomy (36 Experiments)In the course of our experiments details of technique have been modified and the present technique, which has been used in the last 20 transplants, has had an operative mortality of *
We have described two females with extensive freckling and scaly lesions and conclude that they have a widespread form of Grover's disease associated with lentiginous sun-induced 'freckling'. We report these cases to draw attention to an unusual pattern of Grover's disease that can simulate Darier's disease.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
