Six new sesquiterpene dilactones-mikanolide, dihydromikanolide, scandenolide, dihydroscandenolide, deoxymikanolide, and miscandenin-have been isolated from above-ground parts of Mikunia scandens (L.) Willd. The first five are germacranediolides whose structure and stereochemistry were determined by a combination of chemical methods and nmr techniques and by correlation of deoxymikanolide with the germacranediolide isabelin. Miscandenin is an elemanediolide containing a dihydrooxepine ring, whose formation can be rationalized as involving the Cope rearrangement of a 1,lO-deoxymikanolide precursor.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
