Weak isosinglet Neutral Heavy Leptons (ν m ) have been searched for using data collected by the DEL-PHI detector corresponding to 3.3 × 10 6 hadronic Z 0 decays at LEP1. Four separate searches have been performed, for short-lived ν m production giving monojet or acollinear jet topologies, and for long-lived ν m giving detectable secondary vertices or calorimeter clusters. No indication of the existence of these particles has been found, leading to an upper limit for the branching ratio BR(Z 0 → ν m ν) of about 1.3 × 10 −6 at 95% confidence level for ν m masses between 3.5 and 50 GeV/c 2 . Outside this range the limit weakens rapidly with the ν m mass. The results are also interpreted in terms of limits for the single production of excited neutrinos.

For optimal operation of chemical-vapor deposition ͑CVD͒ diamonds as charged particle detectors it is important to have a detailed understanding of the charge-carrier transport mechanism. This includes the determination of electron and hole drift velocities as a function of electric field, charge carrier lifetimes, as well as effective concentration of space charge in the detector bulk. We use the transient-current technique, which allows a direct determination of these parameters in a single measurement, to investigate the charge-carrier properties in a sample of single-crystal CVD diamond. The method is based on the injection of charge using an ␣ source close to the surface and measuring the induced current in the detector electrodes as a function of time.

DELPHI (DEtector with Lepton, Photon and Hadron Identication) is a detector for e + e physics, designed to provide high granularity o v er a 4 solid angle, allowing an eective particle identication. It has been operating at the LEP (Large Electron-Positron) collider at CERN since 1989. This article reviews its performance.(To be submitted to Nucl. Inst. and Meth.) ii

Position-sensitive detector systems, initially developed for the detection of X-rays, have been adapted for their use in electron emission channeling experiments. Each detection system consists of a 30.8×30.8 mm 2 22×22-pad Si detector, either of 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm or 1 mm thickness, four 128-channel preamplifier chips, a backplane trigger circuit, a sampling analog to digital converter, a digital signal processor, and a personal computer for data display and storage. The operational principle of these detection systems is described, and characteristic features such as energy and position resolution and maximum count rate, which have been determined from tests with conversion electrons and β − particles in the energy range 40-600 keV, are presented.
