We present a Hawkes model approach to foreign exchange market in which the high frequency price dynamics is affected by a self exciting mechanism and an exogenous component, generated by the pre-announced arrival of macroeconomic news. By focusing on time windows around the news announcement, we find that the model is able to capture the increase of trading activity after the news, both when the news has a sizeable effect on volatility and when this effect is negligible, either because the news in not important or because the announcement is in line with the forecast by analysts. We extend the model by considering non-causal effects, due to the fact that the existence of the news (but not its content) is known by the market before the announcement.
Independent component analysis (ICA) was used for the processing of cardiological signals obtained by means of fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG), a technique allowing the non-invasive recording of the weak magnetic field variations associated to the electrical activity of the fetal heart. Purpose of the present work was to verify whether a computational-light ICA algorithm (FastICA), tailored to the characteristics of fMCG, could reconstruct reliable signals of the fetal cardiac activity during the last gestational trimester, when good electrophysiological traces are difficult to obtain although being extremely important for clinical diagnosis of severe fetal dysrhythmias. Several combinations of input recordings and output components were examined in order to assess the best configuration to successfully use FastICA. The reconstructed traces were compared with those obtained with deterministic techniques already used for this purpose, and they showed to be stable and reliable, unaffected by overlapped maternal and fetal beats and suitable for clinical applications.
IntroductionThis is the first case of suture granuloma mimicking isolated ovarian cancer relapse. Only six analogous cases have been previously reported in other malignancies.Case presentationWe report the case of a 44-year-old Caucasian woman with partially platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer in which radiological features, including computed tomography and combined 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography, were strongly suggestive of isolated cancer relapse in her right subdiaphragmatic region. Laparoscopic examination resulted negative, but was not completely suitable due to widespread adhesive syndrome. The laparotomy for secondary cytoreductive surgery and biopsy of the suspected area showed inflammatory granuloma caused by nonabsorbable propylene suture, without evidence of neoplastic cells. Moreover, unexpected peritoneal carcinosis was found.ConclusionsThis evidence suggests that clinical details about previous surgical procedures are necessary for adequate interpretation. Although much progress has been made in imaging techniques, especially in the promising field of combined 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography, these procedures should be still thoroughly investigated in order to promptly rule out tumor recurrence and avoid unnecessary surgery.
