Observed relationships among symptoms of stress, depression, subjective sleep complaints, and electroencephalographic power may be relevant to the discrepancy between subjective and objective measures of sleep in patients with insomnia and may be more broadly applicable to sleep complaints in association with stressful life events and major depression.
The authors believe this to be the first prospective controlled study to test the efficacy of an SSRI in the management of anxiety disorders among the elderly. These results support the efficacy of citalopram in late-life anxiety disorders. They need to be replicated in a larger study group.
We examined adult attachment profiles, interpersonal difficulties, and treatment response in 162 women receiving interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for recurrent major depression. Nearly half (43%) of the women in this clinical sample reported a 'Fearful Avoidant' attachment profile in self-reports obtained upon abatement of acute depressive symptoms. As predicted, Fearful Avoidant women reported lower levels of self-esteem and more negative attitudes toward others, as compared with their Secure counterparts. These women also reported heightened interpersonal difficulties in the areas of sociability and intimacy, which remained salient both during and following the acute depressive episode. The results suggest that emotion-focused psychotherapy (a supportive form of psychotherapy) has low efficacy for the treatment of panic disorder. However, emotion-focused psychotherapy may be superior to medical management in helping patients stay in treatment.
