This paper describes the results of a series of tests on a model scale fan rig which were carried out to investigate the sources of broadband fan noise. Various sources of turbulence were identified as sources of broadband noise, in particular rotor boundary layer, duct wall boundary layer flows and rotor wake flows impinging on stator vanes. No single dominant source of noise was found. By using fan noise prediction methods based on analytical models and measured flow parameters, reasonable predictions of the broadband fan noise levels were obtained.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
