Continuing advances in surgical techniques, asepsis, operating theatre protocols and ventilation systems that ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean air, should allow all patients to undergo both invasive and minimally-invasive procedures with reduced risk. Patients having surgery in the United Kingdom are probably less vulnerable to surgical site infections (SSIs) than ever before--despite persisting concerns about meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and increasing antibiotic resistance in other organisms such as vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE).

Having identified these candidates, we will ask our internal medicine doctors to contact them individually in order to emphasize their need for influenza immunization. We will keep accurate records of our success rate. Our goal is to immunize one hundred percent of these high-risk patients. Our Inpatient Influenza Immunization Program will use automated orders through our electronic "POE" system to make sure that eligible inpatients have received, or will receive, influenza immunization prior to discharge. This program will be in effect from October through January. Our goal is to make sure that all eligible inpatients receive appropriate immunizations.
In 2004 the National Patient Safety Agency launched the cleanyourhands campaign to improve hand hygiene in acute NHS trusts in England and Wales through the provision of near patient alcohol hand-rub combined with regularly refreshed prompts. Calls have been made since the campaign started for it to be extended to non-acute healthcare, but the diversity of services and settings in the non-acute sector presents many challenges to successful implementation.
