The authors present two cases of checkrein deformity, a tethering of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon, following ankle surgery. The first case was treated by tenolysis and tendon lengthening posterior to the ankle. The second case was treated by lengthening of the FHL at the midfoot, a more simple procedure which produced a better outcome and faster recovery. The authors recommend this latter treatment should be considered to treat this problem.
Although the proportion of patients with MPS identified in the study sample was small (1/55), this study shows that these diseases are underdiagnosed and that systematic screening can help identify patients who may benefit from specific treatments already available for several MPS types.
The diagnosis of plantar forefoot pain is very extensive. Plantar pain in the forefoot usually occurs due to mechanical aetiologies such as metatarsalgia, stress fractures and nerve damage. Tumours are a rare cause of plantar pain in the forefoot. We report the case of a patient with chronic pain in the plantar region of the forefoot due to a vascular leiomyoma.
