Increasingly serious microplastic pollution in coastal areas and the ecological threats associated with plastics have attracted global attention. The frequency and intensity of typhoons have increased owing to global warming, strongly influencing the distribution and composition of microplastics in coastal ecosystems. In this study, the abundance, composition, diversity, and flux of microplastics in three estuaries and one sewage outlet in Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) were analyzed. The average abundance of microplastics from land-based sources increased 3.6-fold from 14.19 ± 3.60 items/L before Typhoon Kompasu to 51.19 ± 28.53 items/L after the typhoon (p < 0.05). In addition, the proportion of fiber and large microplastics increased after the typhoon. In all samples, microplastics 100–330 μm in size were predominant, and blue was the most abundant color. The diversity in the color and size of microplastics increased after Typhoon Kompasu. The total daily flux of microplastics at the four stations entering ZJB was 3.95 × 1011 items before the typhoon and 9.93 × 1011 items after the typhoon, showing a 2.5-fold increase. This study demonstrated the influence of Typhoon Kompasu on microplastics from land-based sources of ZJB coastal waters and provided vital data for further study on MP pollution in coastal water ecosystems and the impact of typhoons on microplastics.
Nutrients and carbon play important roles in algal bloom and development. However, nutrients and carbon interactions in the period of the spring algal bloom are not well understood. The aim of this study is to explore the nutrients and carbon interactions in the period of the spring algal bloom covering an urban Jinsha Bay (JSB) coastal water in Zhanjiang Bay (South China Sea) using in situ multidiscipline observation. The results showed that the average concentration of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved silicon (DSi) was 97.79 ± 26.31 μmol/L, 12.84 ± 4.48 μmol/L, and 16.29 ± 4.00 μmol/L in coastal water, respectively. Moreover, the average concentration of total dissolved carbon (TDC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and organic carbon (DOC) in JSB was 2187.43 ± 195.92 μmol/L, 1516.25 ± 133.24 μmol/L, and 671.13 ± 150.81 μmol/L, respectively. Furthermore, the main dominant species were Phaeocystis globosa and Nitzschia closterium during the spring algal bloom. Additionally, the correlation analysis showed salinity (S) was significantly negatively correlated with nutrients, indicating that nutrients derived from land-based sources sustained spring algal bloom development. However, as the major fraction of TDC, DIC was significantly positively correlated with S, which was mainly derived from marine sources. Besides, the algal density showed a significant positive correlation with temperature (T) (p < 0.001) and dissolved oxygen (DO) (p < 0.001), but a significant negative correlation with DIC (p < 0.05), suggesting that spring algal blooms may be simulated by water T increase, and then large amounts of DIC and nutrients were adsorbed, accompanying DO release through photosynthesis in coastal water. This study revealed nutrients and carbon interactions in the spring algal bloom of urban eutrophic coastal water, which has implications for understanding the nutrients and carbon biogeochemical cycle and algal bloom mitigation under climate change and anthropogenic pressures in the future.
Water-soluble anions and suspended fine particles have negative impacts on ecosystems and human health, which is a current research hotspot. In this study, coastal suburb, coastal urban area, coastal tourist area, and coastal industrial area were explored to study the spatiotemporal variation and influencing factors of water-soluble anions and total suspended particles (TSP) in Zhanjiang atmosphere. In addition, on-site monitoring, laboratory testing, and analysis were used to identify the difference of each pollutant component at the sampling stations. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, PO43−, and TSP were 29.8 μg/m3, 19.6 μg/m3, 45.6 μg/m3, 13.5 μg/m3, and 0.28 mg/m3, respectively. The concentration of Cl−, NO3−, PO43−, and atmospheric TSP were the highest in coastal urban area, while the concentration of SO42− was the highest in coastal industrial area. Moreover, there were significantly seasonal differences in the concentration of various pollutants (p < 0.05). Cl− and SO42− were high in summer, and NO3− and TSP were high in winter. Cl−, SO42−, PO43−, and TSP had significant correlations with meteorological elements (temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed). Besides, the results showed the areas with the most serious air pollution were coastal urban area and coastal industrial area. Moreover, the exhaust emissions from vehicles, urban enterprise emissions, and seawater evaporation were responsible for the serious air pollution in coastal urban area. It provided baseline information for the coastal atmospheric environment quality in Zhanjiang coastal city, which was critical to the mitigation strategies for the emission sources of air pollutants in the future.
