The majority of Greek nonprofit organizations active in the field of human services belong in two categories: the first is homes for the elderly that provide assisted living to seniors and the second is philanthropic societies, which primarily fight against poverty. This paper argues that this sector is small in terms of membership, voluntary performance, beneficiaries, and budget. Nonprofit organizations have succeeded in developing close relationships with local communities, as well as in providing essential alleviation quickly and flexibly. On the other hand, organizations are very dependent on the state and they keep beneficiaries away from decision making; moreover, their contribution to building social capital is trivial and participation in policy-making minimal.
This article examines the degree of the application of social marketing in Greece, a country where the economic and social crisis has made the use of social marketing imperative. However, the Greek scientific community has not yet fully adopted the theory behind social marketing, and most contemporary campaigns ignore many of the parameters used in modern, effective social marketing. There are signs that social marketing is slowly but steadily expanding. The road ahead may be steep, but it is wide open.

Voluntarism remains globally important
for many social issues and one of them
is social cohesion. Historically, Greece’s
Civil Society was weak and dependent on
the political parties. Voluntarism is totally
absent from the Greek public sector and
hardly developed within the Church. The
main voluntary activity is channeled through
Voluntary Organizations. This article focuses
on formal, private, non-profi t distributing,
self-governing voluntary organizations
whose main activity is in the fi eld of social
protection. We argue that the sector is
small and weak and has not succeeded in
adapting itself to the changing environment.
Membership declines and all indicators
show that the sector will shrivel further in
the future.
