This study contrasts the skills that managers use in the public and private sectors. Subjects were 131 mid to upper level managers who participated in the President's Commission on Executive Exchange. Although results indicate significant differences in skill use and importance between sectors, they appear to be a function of a public/private sector bias.
75 men and 72 women (25 to 45 yr.) in undergraduate management courses were classified as internal and external in orientations on Rotter's I-E scale. The former perceived more informal sources of feedback such as self and co-workers as more useful but the latter perceived more formal sources as more useful. Observations are consistent with prior research.
