A rapid gravimetric method is described for the determination of silicon in aluminum alloys for amounts exceeding 1.5%. An acid attack is employed using phosphoric, nitric, and sulfuric acids. The silicon is oxidized by evaporation of the solution, an excess of perchloric acid is added, and the silicic acid is dehydrated by moderate boiling of the perchloric acid.
