An increasing number of intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are emerging from laboratories into operational training organizations in government as well as in the private sector. The Air Force Human Resources Laboratory research and development on Microcomputer Intelligence for Technical Training (MIlT) demonstrated that such intelligent training systems can be developed and delivered in the MS DOS environment. Current work, described herein, has the goal of building an environment in which intelligent tutoring systems for technical training can be developed by instructional designers and/or subject matter personnel. The availability of an ITS authoring system for IBM-AT class computers promises to increase significantly the application of such systems for a variety of technical training applications.
