This paper suggests that the feud between Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera, although well documented and indisputable, should not hide what the two founding fathers of modern Ireland had in common : a parallel experience, a similar political outlook, a shared vision of Ireland's future, and much the same pragmatic frame of mind. Hence the tragedy of their estrangement. Despite the bitterness of their enmity, there is nothing to substantiate the theory of de Valera 's direct responsibility in Michael Collins's death.
The Unionists of Northern Ireland are not very convincing when they strongly deny that they are experiencing a crisis of identity just like the nationalist population in the Republic. Politically, economically and even culturally, the Unionists have seen their certitudes baffled by the course of modern history. Perhaps what they need first and foremost in the present circumstances is some sort of Forum of their own to reach a consensus about who they are and how they intend to work their way into a civilised, stable and just society, away from the «not an inch» mentality which is not only outdated, but immensely harmful to everyone in the Province.
