Knowledge of anatomical anomalies is significant for all specialists in clinical practice and may prevent serious complications following medical procedures. This report presents the rare crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) with atypical renal vasculature in cadaver of a 68-year-old man. The ectopic kidney was located on right side with four renal veins, three renal arteries, two ureters, where one of them is double. The embryological background, as well as the potential clinical significance of this morphological variation, is discussed. An interventional radiological and surgical procedure should be appropriately implemented to treat anomalies of vessels and CFRE.
One of the masterpieces of Polish cinema is the debut film by Witold Leszczyński The Days of Matthew (1967, Żywot Mateusza). It is an adaptation of the novel Fuglane by Tarjei Vesaas, which appeared in translation into Polish in 1964. Leszczyński’s awarded film work has become an object of numerous analyses. However, there has been no particular research on the origins of The Days of Matthew. This article aims at presenting and interpreting the genesis of the film, viewed from three different perspectives: the existential, the ethical and the technical one. The study is largely based on previously unknown information or rarely cited sources.
The Danish literary critic Georg Brandes (1842-1927) played an important role in late nineteenth-century Polish culture. By giving public lectures in Warsaw, Cracow and Lviv, he championed the cause of Polish independence and inspired Polish positivists. Brandes's closeness with the Poles was shaken when he instigated a debate on the Jewish question and Polish anti-Semitism, so that his relationship with Poland gradually transformed into distance and hostility. This article examines the background, genesis and development of the conflict while also outlining research perspectives on this difficult and politically sensitive topic. De Bończa Bukowski analyses those of Brandes's most relevant views on the Polish and Jewish question-views that took shape in relation to contemporary discourses on liberal nationalism, assimilation as well as Zionism.
One of the most important features of Czeslaw Milosz’s (1911–2004) literary output is his dialogue with religious thinkers. The Swedish eighteenth-century theologian and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg is among his important “interlocutors”. The present paper aims at discussing the key motifs in Milosz’s reflections on Swedenborg’s theology as well as defining the specific character of his interpretation of the thought of the author of Arcana Coelestia. In Swedenborg’s work, Milosz looked primarily for a remedy for the disease of modernity, whose most severe symptom is the disintegration of the world, which became subjected to the rule of William Blake’s Urizen. For Milosz the modern man is homeless within the inhuman space of an infinite universe which cannot be grasped by imagination. Swedenborg, on the other hand, restores the vertical points of reference, Heaven and Hell, and at the same time places them within the human soul. The restitution of spatial points of reference is of immense significance to Milosz, who emphasizes that Swedenborg’s system was aimed at liberating imagination, fettered by the scientific world-view. While reading Swedenborg, Milosz remarked also that the cause of Christianity’s weakness lay in its loss of original integrity and unity, and in its theology of marital love characterized by fear and escapism. The source of Milosz’s fascination with Emanuel Swedenborg’s thought has to do, among other things, with the positive and integrating force of Swedenborg’s thought, the idea of uniting man with God, matter with spirit, faith with reason, and language with being.
