EFL reading classes are often teacher-centered and only focus on direct knowledge transmission, the emphasis is often put on the production of comprehension rather than the processing skills. This research attempts to maximize the students participation in evaluating the process of reading by using speed reading program, to find out the strategies they use in the reading process, and to know the students perceptions on speed reading in order to enhance their reading comprehension skill in English. The participants of the study are twenty one students of English Education Study Program of Faculty of Teachers Training and Educational Sciences, in the fifth semester of 2017/2018 academic year. The data were collected from the students reading graphs, reflection journals, and interview. The major findings of this research are: (1) the average of students reading rate is below the ideal speed 300 wpm, but the average result of comprehension score is excellent. Both reading rate and reading comprehension show a progress. (2) Most of the students had used cognitive strategies and unconsciously used metacognitive strategies also. (3) Most of the students showed positive perceptions toward the speed reading program, they were also motivated and able to evaluate themselves to develop their reading skill. It can be concluded that at this level, they have acquired some reading skills and strategies, and by evaluating and recognizing their own weaknesses, they have tried to improve themselves to get better.Keywords: EFL, Case Study, Speed Reading, Strategy, Perception
TOWARD MALL IN LEARNING ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION: POTENTIALS AND PITFALLS In this era of technology, the use of mobile phone, which is wireless, personal, networking, and ubiquitous have influenced every aspect of human life. Using mobile technology in language learning would give opportunity to learn outside the conventional class and decrease English learning problems in EFL setting. By using mobile phone, the learners could access information and develop it across space, be connected to the others and explore their ability more. This study aimed at investigating the use of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in learning English Pronunciation. This study was qualitative approach which employed case study as the method. The study involved 30 students English Education Study Program. The data are gathered from observation, questionnaire, and Focused Group Discussion (FGD). The result shows that the use of MALL has benefited the students in enhance their ability in English Pronunciation through ELSA Speak application. The pitfalls mostly lay in the problems of signal and network in the learning process. Thus, MALL should be integrated in learning English process since it is perceived to be useful to enhance students’ performance in learning English.
Online learning has been going on for almost 2 years now since pandemic and caused a dramatic change of education, with the rise of e-learning, where teaching takes place remotely and using a variety of digital platforms. One of the challenges is access internet and technology used in digital learning that forced the lecturers to innovate in providing a learning approach or using innovative teaching media as well as teaching material to facilitate students in the learning process independently wherever they are. The shift away from the education system caused by the COVID-19 pandemic raises the question of whether the adoption of online learning will continue post-pandemic, and how such a shift will impact education systems around the world. This study proposed some of the objective due to the recent condition of the education field. One of the objectives is to describe the students-teacher reflection toward the implementation of digital interactive book in their class. The study employed a descriptive analysis research design and gained the data from semi structured interview and questionnaire. The participant of this study was a class studying Grammar subject in a blended class of a second year at a higher educational institution (FKIP) in Universitas Pakuan. The result of the study showed that somehow, the students have positive reflections toward the use of digital interactive book designed by the researchers.
