Distinct element method was used to model a rock material and simulate orthogonal machining of this material. A rock specimen was created to approximate Carthage marble, the rock material used in this study. A methodology was developed to apply a hydrostatic pressure to the rock specimen during the simulation. Comparison between machining with and without hydrostatic pressure was presented. It was found that the application of a hydrostatic pressure enhances plastic deformation during material removal. Longer chips are formed and cutting force increases with pressure. The distinct element method is shown to be an effective tool in modeling of rock cutting and can provide insights on the tool-rock interactions.
