Introduction: Albinism is a rare hereditary genetic disorder, characterized by melanogenesis disorders associated to varying degrees of cutaneous, atrial and visual disorders. In Libreville, no data on the subject is available. Purpose: To describe the ocular manifestations found in albinos living in Libreville. Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study that took place in Libreville during a year from and that concerned 43 albinos. The inclusion criteria were any albino with oculocutaneous albinism present in Libreville who has agreed to participate in the investigation. The variables studied were age, sex, visual acuity, ametropia, iris color, iris transillumination, strabismus, nystagmus, torticollis, amblyopia, optic disc, photophobia, foveal hypoplasia and retinal hypopigmentation. Data was collected and analyzed using Epi info TM 7.2.0.1 CDC and IBM ® SPSS ® V21 Statistic software. Results: The mean age was 21.2 ± 17 years with a (F/M) ratio of 0.53. Visual acuity by far without correction (AVLC SC) < 3/10 was found in 88.4% of cases. Astigmatism, two-tone iris and torticollis were found respectively in 52.7%, 51% and 26% of cases. Retinal hypopigmentation and foveal hypoplasia were noted in 65.1% and 86% of cases. Divergent strabismus was noted in 71.4% and small and pale papilla in 95.1% of cases. Photophobia, iris transillumination, nystagmus and amblyopia were noted in 100% of cases. Conclusion: The ocular manifestations encountered in our series are similar to those described in literatures.
We report the clinical observation of an HIV-positive/AIDS patient with bilateral macular hemorrhage, which resulted in the identification of severe thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is a common hematologic anomaly during HIV infection. Its frequency increases with the decrease in CD4 T lymphocytes and the passage to the AIDS stage. Its pathophysiology in this context is complex and multifactorial. Hemorrhagic complications usually appear for platelets less than 50,000/mm 3 and this risk is greater at a rate of less than 20,000/mm 3 . Retinal hemorrhages may go unnoticed, only macular localization results in clinical expression. OCT is of paramount importance in accurate topographic diagnosis of macular hemorrhages by locating their seats which can be pre, intra or under retinal. Management requires the balance of infectious and hematologic factors. Ophthalmic surgical treatments should be considered in a second step.
Introduction: Nystagmus is a static ocular disorder characterized by an oscillatory, involuntary and rhythmic movement of eyes. In Libreville, no data on the subject is available. The purpose of this study is to describe clinical characteristics of nystagmus in albinos living in Libreville. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study including 43 albinos with oculocutaneous albinism and nystagmus during the period from February 01, 2017 to February 01, 2018. Variables studied were age, sex, visual acuity, objective refraction, characteristics of the nystagmus including morphology, direction, intensity and associated signs such as stiff neck and squint. Results: The mean age was 21.2 ± 17 years with a female-dominated ratio of 0.53. The visual acuity from afar without correction (AVLSC) was less than 3/10 in 88.4% of the cases. The most common ametropia was astigmatism in 51.2% of cases. Nystagmus was present in all albinos. The spring type was found in 69.7% of cases. The direction was horizontal in 67.4% of the cases and rotary in 32.6% of the cases. The intensity was moderate in 55.8% of cases. The blocking position was the primary near vision position in 69.7% of the cases. Nystagmus was associated with a stiff neck in 28% of the cases and strabismus in 48.8% of the cases. Conclusion: The albinos nystagmus living in Libreville is of the spring type, horizontal direction, of moderate intensity and calmed in the primary position in near vision.
