The farside gravity field of the Moon is improved from the tracking data of the Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) via a relay subsatellite. The new gravity field model reveals that the farside has negative anomaly rings unlike positive anomalies on the nearside. Several basins have large central gravity highs, likely due to super-isostatic, dynamic uplift of the mantle. Other basins with highs are associated with mare fill, implying basalt eruption facilitated by developed faults. Basin topography and mantle uplift on the farside are supported by a rigid lithosphere, whereas basins on the nearside deformed substantially with eruption. Variable styles of compensation on the near- and farsides suggest that reheating and weakening of the lithosphere on the nearside was more extensive than previously considered.
A study of hybrid inverted quantum-dot (QD) light-emitting diodes constructed with and without AlO interlayers is presented. The AlO interlayers are deposited at ZnO/QDs or/and QDs/4,4'-bis(carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl interfaces, resulting in large improvement of device performance, including luminance, current efficiency, and device lifetime. Especially, the devices with QD emitters sandwiched by two AlO layers exhibits outstanding performance, the longest operation lifetime, and mediate efficiency. The maximum current efficiency of 15.3 cd/A is obtained, an enhancement factor of 35% in comparison to that (11.3 cd/A) of conventional device without AlO layer. Moreover, device lifetime is also largely enhanced, over 110 000 h for the device containing two AlO interlayers, nearly 40% enhancement relative to that of conventional device that shows a lifetime of only 80 000 h. On the basis of electrical property and photoluminescence spectroscopy studies, we demonstrate that the AlO interlayers play crucial roles in suppressing the leakage current across the device and reducing exciton quenching induced by ZnO.
We identify herein a novel signaling function of the Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4), the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor mediating the innate immune response, in inducing the expression of CD11b/CD18 integrin in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Studies were made in PMNs isolated from TLR4-deficient (TLR4(-/-)) and C57BL/6 [wild-type (WT)] mice. We observed increased CD11b expression in WT PMNs within 3 h after LPS challenge, whereas CD11b was not expressed in TLR4(-/-) PMNs above basal levels. TLR4-activated CD11b expression was cycloheximide sensitive and involved the activation of transcription factors, NF-kappaB and c-Jun/PU.1. TLR4(-/-) PMNs challenged with LPS were functionally defective as the result of the impaired CD11b expression in that they failed to adhere and did not migrate across endothelial cells in response to N-formylmethionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine. TLR4 also promoted increased binding of LPS to PMNs on the basis of expression of CD11b. Thus TLR4 signaling activates synthesis and upregulation of CD11b and is essential for PMN adhesion and transmigration. Our data suggest an important role of TLR4-activated CD11b expression in the mechanism of the PMN host-defense response to LPS.
Cu(2)SnS(3) nanocrystals with metastable zincblende and wurtzite structures have been successfully synthesized for the first time. Alloyed (ZnS)(x)(Cu(2)SnS(3))(1-x) and (CuInS(2))(x)(Cu(2)SnS(3))(1-x) nanocrystals with arbitrary composition (0 ≤x≤ 1) and ultra-broad tunable band gaps (3.63 to 0.94 eV) were obtained.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
