To investigate the characteristics of pesticide poisoning in Jiangsu province and provide a scientific basis for measures for the prevention of pesticide poisoning. Information from pesticide poisoning report cards from 2007 to 2016 was derived from the Occupational Disease and Occupational Health Information Monitoring System, and the characteristics of pesticide poisoning patients were assessed via descriptive analysis. A total of 30,789 pesticide poisoning cases were reported in Jiangsu Province. Of these cases, 23,557 were non-occupational poisonings, accounting for 76.5% of the reported cases. There were 1705 deaths from pesticide poisoning, and the fatality rate was 5.5%. Numerous cases occurred in northeast Jiangsu. Pesticide poisoning cases were primarily concentrated in individuals 36–60 years of age. Pesticide poisoning primarily occurred in the summer. The top types of pesticides causing poisoning were organophosphates. The fatality rate of intentional pesticide poisoning was the lowest among the age group of 0 to 14 years, while the highest was noted among people over 61 years. Therefore, pesticide poisoning is a major problem in Jiangsu Province. We need to strengthen the management of highly toxic pesticides and implement effective health education on the use of pesticides.
Context Baicalin, a flavonoid extracted from radix scutellariae, possesses various pharmacological effects, including protective effects on renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF), but its possible role and mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Objective This study explores the protective effects and mechanisms of baicalin on RIF. Materials and methods C57BL/6 male mice were divided into six groups: sham, model, low baicalin, middle baicalin, high baicalin and positive drug groups. The unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model of RIF was constructed and treated with baicalin doses (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) and a positive control drug (valsartan, 8 mg/kg). H&E staining was used to observe the pathological changes in renal tissues, Masson staining was performed to evaluate collagen deposition in renal tissues, and immunohistochemical examination was adopted to determine α-SMA and extracellular matrix (ECM) expression. Primary mouse fibroblasts were isolated, extracted and treated with baicalin and/or TGF-β. qRT-PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were applied to detect the inflammatory responses. Moreover, ECM and TGF-β/Smad expression levels were evaluated by western blot assay. Results Baicalin ameliorated RIF in UUO mice by inhibiting fibrosis and inflammatory responses. The TGF-β/Smad pathway was significantly suppressed in the UUO mouse model. Additionally, baicalin significantly inhibited ECM expression and inflammatory factors in fibroblasts treated with TGF-β. TGF-β/Smad pathway activation was significantly decreased in fibroblasts. Discussion and conclusions These findings support the use of baicalin as a potential therapeutic option for the treatment of RIF by possibly inhibiting the TGF-β/Smad signalling pathway.
Objective Adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEJ) is a relatively rare malignancy in Western countries whose specific clinicopathological characteristics and associated prognosis have not been comprehensively described. Methods Data on patients with AEJ between 2005 and 2015 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were extracted, evaluated, and compared with patients with gastric cancer (GC) in general. Overall survival (OS) was evaluated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model to identify risk factors predictive for OS, and the results were used to construct a nomogram to predict 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS among patients with AEJ. Results A total of 8013 patients diagnosed with AEJ were identified from the records of 30,179 patients with GC. The mean age was 65.4 (SD = 12.0) years, 79.5% were men, 87.2% were Caucasian, 91.5% were moderately-to-poorly differentiated, 34.4% had AJCC stage I AEJ, and 28.8% had stage IV. The median OS was 18 months, and the 5-year OS was 25.8% (95% CI: 24.8–26.8%). Fewer patients with AEJ had undergone surgical resection, fewer had T+ and N+ (N2~N3) disease ( P < 0.001), and fewer had distant metastases compared to the patients with GC ( P < 0.05). In the univariate and multivariate analyses, age, race, summary stage, N stage, M stage, and surgery were identified as independent risk factors. The nomogram had a calibration index of 0.726. Conclusion AEJ was found to have distinct clinicopathological characteristics. Age, race, summary stage, N stage, M stage, and surgery were independently associated with OS. The nomogram accurately predicted 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
