Abstract.A NiCrAlY coating has been prepared by electrospark deposition (ESD) technology on gun steel and its isothermal oxidation behavior at 950°C investigated. The results indicated that the NiCrAlY coating consists only of a homogeneous single β-NiAl phase; NiCrAlY coatings substantially increase the high-temperature oxidation resistance of gun steel and the oxidation process is retarded mainly by the presence of θ-Al 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 oxide scales formed on the coating.
