The study on the example of the regions of the Great Altai substantiates the paramount nature of the institutional basis for the sustainable and effective development of cross-border areas. The models of integration efforts of the border areas with the aim of positive changes in the life of local communities and the economic complex are studied and proposed. More than than, the authors importance of a differentiated approach to the processes of gradual reforming of socioeconomic realities with the obligatory consideration of the natural-geographical component of the space in question with a view to its balanced and optimal functioning.
The article made a spatial-economic and cartographic analysis of the territories of the Greater Altai in terms of their competitiveness and prospects for sustainable development. The position is substantiated in the paper that the regions in question should more closely cooperate, and the article suggests the most optimal options for creating cross-border clusters and inclusion in value chains. As a result of the study, conclusions are drawn about the desirability of regional specialization not only in resource-intensive industries.
