In English as Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context, it is compulsory for the students to make reflections of literary works. The current study is aimed at examining how the students implement Gibbs� reflective cycle in making reflections of literary analysis. The qualitative study employed a document analysis upon the students� reflection artefacts. The students� reflections are their responses to a short story written by Amy Tan. The findings of the study revealed that Gibbs� reflective cycle is a good framework to be used by the students in writing reflections upon literary works they are working on. The well-structured framework of writing reflection helped the students explore the literary work deeply, since the reflective cycle accommodates important aspects that can be explored from the literary work by the students. It can be concluded from this study that among the models of reflective writing developed by Kolb, Johnson, and Gibbs, the latest model is considered the most suitable to be used in literary classroom since its well-structured model enables the students to write better reflections of literary works.Keywords: reflective writing; Gibbs� reflective cycle framework; literary works; literary analysis.
This research is to investigate how EFL college students response in enjoying short stories by using Wattpad and to find out how their perception and experiences in enjoying short stories by means reading Wattpad. As interest in literacy activities, EFL college students’ choose Wattpad as an application to read short stories, Wattpad is a fairly popular and efficient application for reading short stories and can provide comments directly within the short story paragraphs and Wattpad has many advantages in promoting reader-response theory to EFL college students’ .This case study was conducted to the college students and 40 students. Three instruments covering the observation, the interview, and the questionnaire were chosen to gain the data. It was concluded that there is the positive feedback of using Wattpad as a media to learning literature similar to those previous studies, this research also focuses on Wattpad as a media to learning literature.
This study investigated the use of digital literature in teaching reading narrative text in a State High School in Ciamis. This study is aimed to finding out the teachers’ implementation of using digital literature in teaching reading narrative text and the students’ perception of using digital literature in teaching reading narrative text. Therefore, the writer took one English teacher and one class of eleventh grade students as the purposive sampling. Furthermore, the writer used case study as her research design and conducted the classroom observations to find out how the teacher implemented the digital literature in teaching reading narrative text. The questionnaire was used to figuring the students’ perception of using digital literature in teaching reading narrative text. The finding of the study showed that the teacher implemented well of the use digital literature in teaching and learning process. Besides, there were a lots of students influenced of using digital literature in teaching and learning activity. For example, students felt enjoyable and they became more active in the classroom. It can be concluded that the use of digital literature enabled students to comprehend the narrative text easier. Finally, the writer suggests that the English teacher should implement the digital literature on teaching reading of narrative text during the learning process
This article reports the students’ perceptions in implementing Quipper School as an e- learning platform in teaching English and to know the advantages and disadvantages of it. This study took two sample classes with the overall fifty-three students by using cluster sampling technique and focusing on the survey study method. Twenty questionnaires provided to identify the students’ perceptions about quipper school. A depth information appear to be as important to gain more information and continuous responses to explore the advantages and disadvantages of implementing quipper school that have been undertaken by interviewing the students. The findings revealed that the students are comfortable learning with technology and also prefer to use IT. More significantly, The advantages of quipper school keep interaction between teacher and student in and out of the classroom, students still get lesson or review the material even though the teacher is not present in the classroom, and enhances students’ learning experiences using new learning system. Besides, quipper school also has disadvantages when it is applied in learning process, such as unstable internet connections, limited facilities (computer) that support learning by using quipper school, and there was no speaking material which it could be implemented in quipper school. It can be noted today learning and teaching can benefit from using quipper school in teaching English, students still get a lesson even though the teacher is not present to provide direct instruction and students can improve their achievement in learning English by reviewing the material wherever and whenever they are.
The purpose of this paper is aimed at investigating the factors that influence foreign language anxiety among the students in a speaking class, and how they perceive about overcoming foreign language anxiety. The present study used a questionnaire to find out the factors that influenced students’ foreign language anxiety. An interview was conducted in order to find out the students’ perception of their foreign language anxiety. It was found that students felt anxious when they were unable to comprehend communication in class (62.5%). Test and speaking in front of class became one of the factors that caused students to experienced anxiety (43%). On the other hand, fear of receiving bad comments from the teacher and the other students was the third factor that students experienced anxiety (61.8%). Through the semi-structured interviews, it showed that students reduced the anxiety by practicing the pronunciation, and memorizing the vocabulary. Besides, the teacher played a role in creating and reducing students’ foreign language anxiety. The teacher who was able to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere, and focused on student-centered learning, the students argued that it could reduce their foreign language anxiety. Penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kecemasan bahasa asing siswa. Wawancara dilakukan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang kecemasan bahasa asing mereka. Ditemukan bahwa siswa merasa cemas ketika mereka tidak dapat memahami komunikasi di kelas (62,5%). Tes dan berbicara di depan kelas menjadi salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan siswa mengalami kecemasan (43%). Di sisi lain, ketakutan menerima komentar buruk dari guru dan siswa lain adalah faktor ketiga yang membuat siswa mengalami kecemasan (61,8%). Melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur menunjukkan bahwa siswa mengurangi kecemasan dengan mempraktikkan pengucapan, dan menghafal kosa kata. Selain itu, guru berperan dalam menciptakan dan mengurangi kecemasan bahasa asing siswa. Guru yang mampu menciptakan suasana belajar yang menyenangkan, dan fokus pada pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa, para siswa berpendapat bahwa itu dapat mengurangi kecemasan bahasa asing mereka.
