The compound 1,2-cyclohexanedione dioxime, nioxime, is similar to dimethylglyoxime in yielding scarlet and yellow precipitates with nickel and palladium, respectively, which can be used for the gravimetric determination of these metals. It is soluble in water in contrast to dimethylglyoxime, so that its use is theoretically unaccompanied by danger of contaminating the precipitates with excess reagent or of solubility loss by the addition of alcohol. On the other hand nioxime is a more powerful reducing agent than dimethylglyoxime, and this introduces some complications in its use.
