Using narrative inquiry, the author explored the multicultural aspects of religious and spiritual experiences, assumptions, and patterns of 9 counselor educators to understand the impact that experiences and beliefs have when supervising and teaching counseling students. A gap exists between counselor standards, ethics, competencies, and practice, because counseling students receive mixed messages about addressing spiritual and religious concerns. Through hermeneutic analysis, 6 themes emerged: (a) religious and spiritual journeys, (b) religious and spiritual practices, (c) relationships, (d) marginalization, (e) modeling, and (f) risk and taboo. Trustworthiness strategies, implications for counselor education, limitations, and directions for future research are described.
Clients who are lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgendered, or queer (LBGTQ) and members or former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes referred to as the Mormon or LDS Church) face a distinctive spiritual conundrum. Often people see LDS members as having "peculiar" beliefs. These "peculiar" beliefs and the social system of the Latter-day Saints distinguish them from other forms of Christianity, and create a paradigm of conflict for those who do not fit in the mold of the Mormon doctrine. In this article the authors examine issues of spirituality and religiosity, examine the literature with regard to effective counseling for LGBTQ Mormons, and review LDS Church doctrines, extracted from seminal works of the LDS Church. These are examined to better explore the difficulties of LGBTQ people and explore the meanings of peculiar and queer and their relevance to the issues of LGBTQ Mormons. Finally the authors address how oppression relates to spirituality and orientation as well as examine the similarities of spiritual formation and sexual identity formation. Understanding these complex spiritual issues will offer a possible solution for counselors who work with this "peculiar and queer" population. As multicultural competence includes addressing issues of spirituality, clinicians will benefit from an increased understanding of the spiritual and religious dilemmas for members of the LDS Church who question a dichotomous view of sexuality.
The author explores spirituality and counseling through research poetry created from in-depth interviews with nine counselor educators. The purpose of the narrative study was to explore the religious and spiritual lived experiences of counselor educators and to recognize the impact these experiences may have when counselor educators teach and supervise counseling students. Because spiritual and religious values are an integral element of humanity and development, continual analysis and increased competency for counselors and counselor educators is essential to better serve clients. Poetry, distilled from counselor educator responses, provides insight into thoughts and feelings related to religion and spirituality and how those thoughts and feelings foster or inhibit counselor training.
This article examines the difficulties couples’s counselors encounter when counseling clients in crises who are coping with two personality disorders: narcissistic personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. Each partner’s complex conflicting problems are intertwined into the relationship creating an increased level of emotional instability leading to crisis situations. A case example is presented with a couple in crisis and implications for counselors in training while working with this couple at a university training clinic.
