To show public transit unified with natural world symbolism, five outdoor sculptures in transportation networks are photographed and shown situated within their site plans. Spanning space, they alter the landscapes of their multimodal stations, while invoking sublime nature. Denver, Colorado; Irving, Texas; Garland, Texas; Los Angeles, California; and Vancouver, British Columbia are the locations. Integrated with each street scene, botany becomes a common vernacular. Conversations about history, shelter, inter-cultural discourse, bicycling, and respite oases unfold. As indicia of public engagement, a review of public records investigates funding sources, selection processes and methods. Variations emerge, among which delegated committees, project architects, contractors, and public-private collaborators make decisions.
Crowd reactions to a sculpture installation were collected at a 3-day open air event attended by 1,020 adults. Objectives of the installation were to raise awareness about air pollution and facilitate a group sculpture collaboration. Themes of scepticism, art appreciation, and further ideas for 3D environmental statements emerged. Artists' engagement with the natural world is explored.
Make sculpture from laundry detergent bottles, found objects and salvaged construction materials. Particle air pollution collects on white fabric and plastic. This black soot-like discoloration can be compared to particle pollution quantities from USA EPA and other, international websites. K-12 curriculum derives from the sculpture itself and data collection of the particulate air pollution. Contemporary studies in education show that sculpture and visual arts used in teaching encourage reading, writing, and cognitive development.
