The potential of 2-lithio-l,3-dithian-epoxide reactions for the stereospecific substitution of the steroid skeleton in a desired position has been illustrated by their application in the preparation of both epimers of 2methyl-3-0x0-and 3-methyl-2-oxo-5a-cholestane.

S z m m a q The reactions of the 2-methyl-1,3-dithian anion with the 17a-and 17P-epimers of 3,3'-ethylenedioxy-l7oxiranylandrost-5-ene have been used to illustrate the potential of dithian-epoxide reactions for the introduction of homocorticoid and homoprogestogen types of functions at C-17 of the steroid skeleton.
