In a double-blind experiment, carbon monoxide (40 or 100 ml of pure gas) was administered to 7 young adults (6 males, 1 female), using a rebreathing technique. Blood carboxyhaemoglobin levels were increased by 2.4–5.4%, depending upon the dose and the period of rebreathing. Pulse rates were tape-recorded during normal laboratory work for 30 min before and 30 min after exposure. Results were uninfluenced by carbon monoxide.
