a "whole-time career equivalent" of the number of years of full-time employment that a given doctor's contribution would represent. The main practical difficulty again, however, is getting good enough data in a constantly changing situation.
Distinction awards SIR,-I am sure many consultants have read the recently published Seventh Report of the Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body and will have found the comments of the review body on distinction awards for the career grades most interesting. Debate has surrounded this subject for the last 30 years, but it may be interesting for consultants to know the results of a survey which the Wessex Regional Committee for Hospital Medical Services has recently carried out. To date, 314 replies have been analysed, and consultants were divided equally whether the incremental scale should be abolished or not. With regard to the introduction of experience payments, 212 were in favour of this whereas 88 were opposed to the concept of experience payments. Regarding distinction awards, consultants were given five alternative answers from which to indicate their preference, with the following results:
