To evaluate the technical feasibility of an MHD system operating in a commercial electricutility environment, Westinghouse conducted a site-specific conceptual design study under contract with the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center. The study involved the retrofit of an MHD system to an existing coal-fired power plant, the Scholz Generating Station, which was selected following evaluations of more than 200 sites. Located in Sneads, Florida, approximately 45 miles west of Tallahassee, the Scholz plant is owned by Gulf Power Company (a subsidiary of the Southern Company).
