There are few reports of reference ranges for haematological values in school age children and most studies extend over a small age range or have excluded a considerable proportion of the study population in an effort to omit those with haemoglobinopathies or anaemia. Blood samples from 2135 children aged 4-19 years, from randomly selected schools, were analysed by automated counter. Reference ranges for red cell, white cell and platelet indices are provided from the results. Median haemoglobin and red blood cell count values for girls and boys rose together with increasing age, up to 12 years, but then diverged. Girls had a higher platelet count than boys. Mean platelet volume rose with age and was inversely related to the platelet count. Plateletcrit fell with age but in girls there was a peri-pubertal peak. Total leucocyte count fell with age. The upper limits for total leucocyte count in this study are approximately 2 x 10(9) lower than those quoted in modern haematology textbooks. Lymphocyte, eosinophil and basophil counts fell with age with little difference between the sexes. Neutrophil and monocyte counts were similar for younger girls and boys but diverged in the older children with the older girls having higher values than boys.
Two designs of voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with mutually coupled and switched inductors are presented in this paper to demonstrate that the tuning range of an LC VCO can be improved with only a small increase in phase noise and die area in a standard digital CMOS process. Particular attention is given to the layout of the inductors to maintain across the tuning range. In addition, different capacitive coarse-tuning methods are compared based on simulated and measured data obtained from test structures. Implemented in a 90 nm digital CMOS process, a VCO with two extra coupled inductors achieves a 61.9% tuning range with an 11.75 GHz center frequency while dissipating 7.7 mW from a 1.2 V supply. This VCO has a measured phase noise of 106 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from the center frequency resulting in a higher figure-of-merit than other recently published VCOs with similar operating frequencies. As bstract. The effects of total renal ischemia (TRI) of 15-87 min duration due to suprarenal clamping of the aorta were studied in 15 mannitol-treated patients undergoing abdominal aortic surgery. 15 patients undergoing similar surgery but requiring only infrarenal clamping served as controls. 1-2 h following TRI, GFR was reduced to only 39% of that in controls, 23±5 vs. 59±7 ml/min (P < 0.001). This could not be ascribed to impaired renal plasma flow (RPF), which was mildly reduced to 331±71 and was not different from the value in controls, 407±66 ml/min. However, impaired PAH extraction (43±7%) and isosthenuria, not present in controls, suggest a primary role for tubular injury in lowering GFR at this time.24 h following TRI, the GFR remained depressed below controls, 45±8 vs. 84±8 ml/min (P < 0.005), while the transglomerular sieving of neutral dextrans was significantly enhanced (radius interval, 24-40 A). A theoretical analysis of transcapillary solute exchange revealed that these findings could be largely explained by a selective reduction of either RPF (-61%) or of transmembrane hydraulic pressure difference (-18%) below control values. Alternately, a combination of these two factors with changes of smaller magnitude could explain the findings. In contrast, a selective increase in oncotic pressure or decrease ofthe glomerular ultrafiltration coefficient could be excluded as a cause of hypofiltration 24 h after TRI. These observations lead us to suggest that the transient azotemia observed following TRI is due to a self-limited
