OBJECrIVES OF SWITCHING SURGE FIELD TESTSThe paper provides guidelines for performing switching surge field tests on EHV systems. Objectives for the field tests are identified. Requirements for the test plan, test procedures, instrumentation, and test documentation are analyzed. The paper is the result of initial work towards development of a more comprehensive guide on this topic.
INTRODUCTIOThe purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for performing staged field tests of switching operations on EHV systems. Such tests have been performed for many years with varying degrees of sophistication and success. Unfortunately, even when the tests are successful, the results are often not presented in a form such that they can be used and analyzed by others. The specific objectives of this paper are as follows:1. Define possibe reasons for performing switching surge field tests on EHV systems, 2. Describe instrumentation requirements for performing the field tests, 3. Describe appropriate test procedures and possible problems associated with the tests, 4. Propose a standard format for presentation of test results, including system data, 5. Present a brief bibliography related to the topic of switching surge field tests. The
