structure structure (solids and liquids) D 2000 24 -012 Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Optical Properties of New Quaternary Chalcogenides of Va-Metals: Rb 2 CuVS 4 , K 2 CuVSe 4 , Rb 2 CuNbSe 4 , Cs 2 CuNbSe 4 and Rb 2 CuNbS 4 . -The title compounds are prepared at 350 • C as new quaternary one-dimensional chain compounds. They crystallize isostructurally in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with Z = 8 as determined by single crystal XRD. They consist of infinite linear chains of alternating edge-sharing CuQ 4 -and M(V)Q 4 -tetrahedra (Q: S, Se; M(V): V, Nb) separated by the alkali metal cations. The optical band gaps ranging between 1.85 (Rb 2 CuVS 4 ) to 2.82 eV (K 2 CuNbS 4 ) do not depend on the type of alkali cation.
