Development of a second cyclotron harmonic gyrotron operating at 0.8 mm wavelengthThe basic operating principles of Cerenkov maser oscillators are briefly reviewed and the experim.ental performance of a 3-mm device is discussed. A power level of approximately lOOk W was achieved at 88 GHz and voltage tuning from 84 to 128 GHz on the fundamental TMo, mode was observed. Operation on higher-order modes at frequencies up to 300-320 GHz was demonstrated, and a two-stage buncher-amplifier configuration was investigated.
Using a dielectric-lined waveguide in combination with a relativistic electron beam, we are able to produce 1 kW of Cerenkov microwave radiation. We have observed the dependence of the output microwave frequency on the beam voltage. In addition, we have detected microwave radiation in excess of 150 GHz, corresponding to higher-order mode interaction.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
