Novel bismaleimide-modified siliconized epoxy intercrosslinked network systems were developed. Siliconized epoxy systems containing 5, 10, and 15% siloxane units were prepared using epoxy resin and hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) with ␥-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (␥-APS) as a compatibilizer and dibutyltindilaurate as a catalyst. The siliconized epoxy systems were further modified with 5, 10, and 15% (wt %) of bismaleimide [(N,NЈ-bismaleimido-4,4Ј-diphenylmethane) (BMI)] and cured by diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and heat-distortion temperature measurement of the matrix samples were carried out to assess their thermal behavior. DSC thermograms of the BMI-modified epoxy systems show unimodel reaction exotherms. The glass transition temperature (T g ) of the cured BMI-modified epoxy and siliconized epoxy systems increases with increasing BMI content. Thermogravimetric analysis and heat-distortion temperature measurements indicate that the thermal degradation temperature and heat-distortion temperature of the BMI-modified epoxy and siliconized epoxy systems increase with increasing BMI content. The morphology of the BMImodified siliconized epoxy systems was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of myringoplasty with or without cortical mastoidectomy in terms of freedom from discharge, graft take up and improvement in hearing. This is a Clinical prospective study of 120 patients from among a group of patients with chronic suppurative otitis media. A detailed history and examination was conducted including pure tone audiogram. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; group A would undergo myringoplasty only and group B would undergo cortical mastoidectomy with myringoplasty. Patients were reviewed after 3 weeks for inspection of the operated ear. Second post-operative review was at 3 months for clinicoaudiological assessment. Group B was found to have slightly more improvement as compared to the other group. No significant difference in the success rates of graft take-up in patients with unilateral or bilateral disease was found. Higher take up rates were seen in large (91.83 %) and medium perforations (90.69 %). In all our failed cases, post-operative ear discharge continued to be a persistent and troubling problem. The average audiological gain was 12.88 dB in group B, whereas it was 12.40 dB in group A. The reduction of air bone gap within each group was found to be significant. There is no statistical significant data indicating that tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy yields better results. When considering the addition of a mastoidectomy to a Tympanoplasty, the performing surgeon should consider not only the potential added benefit but also potential risks and costs to the patient.
A single examination does not fulfill all the functions of assessment. The present study was undertaken to determine the reliability and student satisfaction regarding the objective structured practical examination (OSPE) as a method of assessment of laboratory exercises in physiology before implementing it in the forthcoming university examination. The present study was undertaken in the Department of Physiology of Melaka Manipal Medical College, Manipal Campus, India. During the OSPE, students were made to rotate through 11 stations, of which 8 stations were composed of questions that tested their knowledge and critical thinking and 2 stations were composed of skills that students had to perform before the examiner. One station was kept as the rest station. Performance of the students was assessed by comparing the students' scores in the traditional practical examination (TPE) and OSPE using "Bland-Altman technique." Student perspectives regarding the OSPE were obtained by asking them to respond to a questionnaire. The Bland-Altman plot showed that approximately 63% of the students showed a performance in the scores obtained using the OSPE and TPE within the acceptable limit of 8; 32% of the students scored much above the anticipated difference in the scores, and the rest scored below the anticipated difference in the scores on the OSPE and TPE. Feedback indicated that students were in favor of the OSPE compared with the TPE. Feedback from the students provided scope for improvement before the OSPE was administered for the first time in the forthcoming university examination.
