Highlights Quality of media reporting of celebrity suicide on online media in India is poor. About 85.5% of them violated at least one WHO media reporting guideline. Online search interest for suicide-seeking keywords increased immediately after the reference celebrity suicide, suggestive of the Werther effect. This is possibly associated with poor quality of media reporting of celebrity suicide. There is an urgent need for taking steps to improve the quality of media reporting of suicide in India.
