Recommendations for future research include developing methods for engaging stakeholders, determining the optimal level and timing of stakeholder involvement, expanding RTW research to more diverse work settings, and developing RTW interventions reflecting all stakeholders' interests.
This study provides greater insight into the factors affecting collaboration among a rehabilitation team, an injured worker and other stakeholders. The results may improve understanding of the actions taken by rehabilitation teams and help to optimize their practices.
The more specific indicators identified in this study will allow for more systematic observation of the MM. Subsequent studies will seek to link each indicator described in the model with a specific method of observation.
