This research entitled “Behavior Changes in Paulo Coelho’s Veronika Decides to Die: A Psychological Approach”. The purpose of this study is to analyze the personality of the main character presented in the novel. In addition, the aim of this research is to reveal the main character’s environments contribute to the character’s motivation to life. This novel conducted the struggle from Veronika as the main character for finding her motivation to life.This study used qualitative research; descriptive qualitative methods are used to analyze data. This study used three main concepts of social cognitive theory by Albert Bandura (1986), there are reciprocal determinism, therapy, and dysfunction behavior/depression. This study also applied the theory of social cognitive theory in the book entitled The Theory of Personality by Jess Feist as a tool to analyze the personality of the main character also the main character’s environments contribute to the character’s motivation to life in the novel Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho.In this study, the researcher found two main results. First, this study indicated personality of Veronika as the main character in the novel Veronika Decides to Die based on the social cognitive theory concept that is dysfunction behavior. Based on concept of dysfunction behavior, it shows that Veronika is an introvert person, fainthearted, and suffering from depression. Second, this study discovered the main character’s environments contribute to the character’s motivation to life based on the social cognitive concepts, they are reciprocal determinism and therapy. Based on that theoretical concept, it shows that Veronika’s environment really helps her to find her motivation to life. The low literacy of children in Indonesia is quite alarming because it can affect the competence of critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration that Indonesian children should have. One of the effective ways to ensure that the 4C competency mastery is achieved is by improving and fostering the reading literacy skills of Indonesian children. The purpose of this community service activity is to introduce children literature to children with the aim of increasing their interest in reading and literacy from an early age. It is hoped that in the future, by knowing and reading various literary works, moral values and the cultivation of good character can be given to children. By carrying out this training, it is hoped that students can produce a simple children's work / story in the form of an anthology work. The method of implementing this activity is divided into three stages, namely; the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the final reporting stage. This activity involved two students, namely Rida Alifia (Indonesian Literature Department) and Andini Mandala Putri (English Literature Department). The community service activity partner is SD Negeri Gentan, and community service activity is conducted in SD Negeri Gentan on 21 November 2020, 28 November 2020, 5 December 2020 and 12 December 2020 through zoom meeting online. This activity was attended by 47 students of SD Negeri Gentan and was very well appreciated by the students and teachers. Students can listen well to 4 children's stories submitted by team members. They are able to answer well and retell the contents of the children's stories. The targets and outputs of this community service activity are scientific publication manuscripts published in journals, articles published in print media, activity videos, and IPR certificates. The output target that has been achieved is the production of children's story videos that have been uploaded on the YouTube channel of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, while other output targets such as publication texts and IPR certificates are in process. Translation has now become subject matter since its role as cross-culture and cross-language mediator. This research, then, aims to unfold the translation strategy and ideology reflected in literary work. The data source are the American short story “The Lottery“ written by Shirley Jackson and its Indonesian version “Undian“ translated by Harum L Wibowo. This research employ qualitative approach and descriptive method. Both of the strategy of literary translation theory by Kazakova (2015) and translation ideology theory by Venutti (1994) are used to answer the question of the research. This research found that translator used all four strategies of literary translation proposed by Kazakova; helper strategy (35,57%), observer strategy (26,17%), enlightener strategy (20,13%), and adherent strategy strategy (18,12%). It also found that the strategy used by translator alternately applied both foreignization and domestication ideology on his translation process. Thus, while preserving the foreign culture and language, the translator also adapt ST/SL into TT/TL in his translation process to make it fluent to the target reader.
This research entitled Child Abuse Experienced By The Main Character In Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor And Park: A Psychosocial Analysis. Eleanor and Park was a coming-of-age novel written by Rainbow Rowell. Eleanor, one of the main characters, had a lot of things going on in her life, she lived in poverty and had to deal with child abuse everyday. This research was aimed to identify what kind of abuse Eleanor experienced and to analyze how the abuse affected Eleanor’s psychosocial development. This research was classified into a qualitative research. The data were taken from the novel Eleanor and Park written by Rainbow Rowell. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied four out of eight stages of psychosocial development theory by Erik H. Erikson while trying to classify different types of abuse that Eleanor experienced. The data were in descriptive form which was why the analysis is enlighten by the researcher in descriptive way. The result of this research showed that Eleanor had troubles passing psychosocial development stages due to what she had been through in her home life. She might succeed in Early Childhood stage but since living with her step-father, Richie, and receiving many types of child abuse from him such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and child neglect, she failed to pass three later the stages. In consequence, she grew many unhealthy personalities and getting more distant with people in society. Nonetheless, ever since she met Park, she changed to be a better person, although it took her some time. The story ended without the researcher knowing if she passes the adolescence stage successfully. Therefore, there was still possibility for her to pass later stages well and be a healthy individual.
AbstrakGender sering diidentikkan dengan jenis kelamin atau seks, meskipun mempunyai konsep yang berbeda. Gender dikaitkan pada laki-laki dan perempuan yang dibentuk oleh sosial maupun budaya. Pemahaman tentang wacana maskulin dan feminim dibentuk untuk mengidentifikasi identitas gender yang mana laki-laki harus berprilaku maskulin dan perempuan harus berperilaku feminim. Dengan memilih drama William Shakespeare berjudul Twelfth Night, kajian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana identitas gender digambarkan dan mendeskripsikan ambiguitas identitas gender yang ditunjukkan oleh tokoh dalam drama tersebut. Data diambil dari drama yang dianalisis dengan menghubungkannya pada data kedua dari berbagai referensi yang membahas identitas gender yang digambarkan dalam drama tersebut. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa seks, gender, dan orientasi seksual adalah sesuatu yang cair, tidak alami dan selalu berubah dan dikonstruksi oleh kondisi sosial. Perubahan identitas bisa dikatakan berubah dengan bentuk performativity yang ditampilkan yakni dengan penyamaran Kata Kunci: Identitas Gender, Ambiguitas, dan Performativitas
